From Spanish cuartillo (“⁄48 Castilian bushel, &c.”), from Old Spanish quartillo (“little fourth”) in reference to its forming a fourth celemin, from quarto + -illo (“-elle: forming diminutives”), from Latin quartus (“one-fourth”). Doublet of cuartilla and quartilho.
