From Gaulish cucullos (“hood”), Latinized as a divine name or cult-epithet; compare Latin cucullus (“cowl, hood”). The ultimate origin is uncertain, but Pokorny writes that both are perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kewH- (“to cover”). More at Hooded Spirits.
