Likely a loanword, perhaps from Gaulish or Illyrian; compare Gaulish Cucullātus (“name of a Gaulish god”).
Alternatively (or perhaps in tandem with the above), a reduplicative form of Proto-Indo-European *kuH-l-, zero-grade without s-mobile form of *(s)kewH- (“to cover”). Cognates include Latin cūlus, Old Irish cúl (“bottom”), Lithuanian kẽvalas (“skin, cover”) and indirectly 古期英語 hȳd (English hide). Related to cutis (“hide”).
