Inherited from 古期英語 hæfen, hæfene, from either Old Norse hǫfn or Proto-West Germanic *habanu, from Proto-Germanic *habanō.
The final vowel is either generalised from the 古期英語 oblique forms or continued from the n-stem variant hæfene, though disyllabic forms continuing the ō-stem nominative hæfen are common even in varieties with little apocope.
