Borrowed from Ancient Greek ῡ̔οειδής (hūoeidḗs, “shaped like the letter "υ"”), from ὖ (û) + -ο- (-o-) + -ειδής (-eidḗs, “-like, -oid”). Doublet of hȳoīdeus.
