Ion tracks are created by swift heavy ions penetrating through solids. They correspond to transformed zones of a few nanometers in diameter which can be selectively etched in many insulating solids, or measured by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS) or transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The resulting cones or cylinders can be used as measuring apertures, modified with molecular monolayers or filled by metal and used in microtechnology and nanotechnology.
