From Proto-West Germanic *linnan, from Proto-Germanic *linnaną (“to turn aside, swerve from”), from Proto-Indo-European *leyh₂- (“to deflect, turn away, vanish, slip”). Cognate with Old High German bilinnan (“to yield, stop, forlet, give away”), Old Norse linna (“to stop, rest”), Gothic 𐌰𐍆𐌻𐌹𐌽𐌽𐌰𐌽 (aflinnan, “to go away”).
