Macromutation (also known colloquially as the Hopeful Monster hypothesis) is the term used in evolutionary biology for the hypothesis that sudden jumps in evolution are necessary to explain how new biological species arise. It describes an event of instantaneous speciation, saltation, or systemic mutation, which contributes positively to the production of new major evolutionary groups.
