From Middle English saylyerde, sailyerd, seilȝerd, from 古期英語 seġlġyrd, seġelġyrd (“sailyard”), from Proto-West Germanic *seglagaʀdī and *seglagaʀd (“sailyard, mast”, literally “sail-rod, sail-staff”), equivalent to sail +‎ yard (“staff, rod, stick”). Cognate with German Segelgerte.
