別の表記

語源

First recorded in 1578 as Skallfield; inherited from 中期英語 *Scalfel, from Old Norse skalli (baldness) +‎ fjall (peak).

The form Scawfell predominated during the 19th century before the Ordnance Survey's adoption of the form Scafell displaced it; see Scafell#Name history.

発音

固有名詞

Scafell

  1. A mountain in Cumbria, England.

使用する際の注意点

Wikipedia regards Scafell as a secondary peak, neighbouring Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England. However, the Ordnance Survey makes no such distinction, listing Scafell Pike only. It may be better, therefore, to regard Scafell as the short form of Scafell Pike. The fell country to the south-west is named Sca Fell.

Sca Fell ( /ˈskɔːfəl/ or /skɑːˈfɛl/; also spelled Scafell, archaically Scaw Fell) is a mountain in the English Lake District. Its height of 964 metres (3,162 ft) makes it the second-highest mountain in England after Scafell Pike, from which it is separated by the col of Mickledore.
