Most likely from 古期英語 hēo, hīo (“she”), from Proto-West Germanic *hiju, from Proto-Germanic *hijō f (“this, this one”), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱe-, *ḱey- (“this, here”), but see she for more. Compare heo.
