six-pointer (plural six-pointers)

1. (soccer) A match between two teams on a similar number of points (in a league using the three-points-for-a-win system); so called because the difference between a side winning and losing the match is a six-point swing relative to their opponents.
   • 2007, Stuart Barnes, Sanchez's six-pointer stalemate, The Guardian:

     Sammy Lee has gone from Bolton and Fulham's Lawrie Sanchez is talking about six-pointers.

   • 2014, Arsenal match is a six-pointer, insists Pellegrini, ESPN:

     Manuel Pellegrini believes Arsenal are still in the title race but sees Saturday's clash as a six-pointer that could allow his side to open up a 12-point gap on Arsene Wenger's side.
