From Latin spermatizare (“to spermatize”), possibly via French spermatiser, from Ancient Greek σπερματίζειν (spermatízein, “to sow, spread seed upon”), from σπέρμα (spérma, “seed, sperm”). By surface analysis, spermat- +‎ -ize.
