From Proto-Italic *ūrīnos (“watery”), from Proto-Indo-European *woh₁-r̥ (“water”), possibly a doublet of *wódr̥ (with the "Kortlandt effect", which posits that *d becomes *h₁ under certain conditions). See also Sanskrit वार् (vā́r, “water”), Avestan 𐬬𐬁𐬭𐬀 (vāra, “rain”).
