Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) refers to 'chemicals' (chemical compounds) which have significant vapor pressures which can be dangerous to human health and have adverse effects on the environment (e.g. in 'smog'). VOCs are numerous, varied, and ubiquitous, but references to VOCs are primarily focused on levels of toxicity (and the related dangers of exposure) and/or potential undesired effects on 'the environment'. Although VOCs technically include both man-made and naturally occurring chemical compounds, it is the anthropogenic ('man-made'/non-natural) VOCs that are regulated. VOCs are typically not acutely toxic but, instead, have compounding long-term health effects. Because the concentrations are usually low and the symptoms slow to develop, analysis of VOCs and their effects is a demanding area.
