     The simple anacrosomal aquasperm of the notopteroid Papyocranus afer, the African Knife Fish, appears to be a plesiomorph condition, contrasting with the apomorphic, aflagellate sperm of mormyroids, but does not in itself necessitate exclusion of the mormyroids form the Notopteroidea in which Greenwood (1973) placed them.
