"Prime Minister"は、日本語の「総理大臣」に対応する英語表現である。政府の最高位に位置する公職者を指す。一部の国では、国家元首とは別に存在し、行政の運営を担当する。ただし、国や地域によっては「President」や「Chancellor」などと呼ばれることもある。
「Office(オフィス、事務所)」、「Cabinet(キャビネット、内閣)」、「Government(ガバメント、政府)」、「Parliament(パーラメント、議会)」などが一緒に使われやすい。例えば、「Prime Minister's Office」は「総理大臣官邸」、「Prime Minister's Cabinet」は「総理大臣の内閣」、「Prime Minister's Government」は「総理大臣の政府」、「Prime Minister in Parliament」は「議会の総理大臣」を意味する。
