Borrowed from rare Anglo-Norman Anjoie, possibly from Latin Andecāvia; although the development of Old French aiuel and jaiole from Late Latin *aviolum and caveola superficially indicates that the expected outcome of Andecāvia would be *Anjaie (Late 中期英語 Aungeye probably reflects vowel reduction rather than a reflex of this; see caroyne), the form can be explained by either a divergent development of Proto-Romance /aβʲ/ when stressed or levelling of the /ɔ/ of Old French Anjou (from Andecāvum, Andegāvum). Compare Angers, Anjow.
