From Middle French Dauphiné, from Medieval Latin Delphīnātus (literally “the Dauphinate”), ellipsis of Delphīnātus Viennēnsis (“the Dauphinate of Vienne”, literally “the Viennese Dauphinate”). The Latin delphīnātus (“dauphinate”) derives from delphīnus (“dauphin”) + -ātus (suffix forming abstract nouns).
