Probably from Gaulish *garunda (“shallows, riverbank”) or "rough, grassy," from Proto-Celtic *garwos << Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰer- (“to bristle”). Or, possibly from an Aquitanian hydronym meaning "stony river."
