From 中期英語 Hexham, a contraction of 中期英語 Hestaldesham, Exseldesham, Extoldesham, Hestalasham, Hestoldesham, all variants of 古期英語 Hagustaldeshām (“Hexham”), from 古期英語 Hagustaldes (“Hagustald's”, personal name), from 古期英語 hagosteald (“owner of a fenced-in plot of land, one living in his lord's house, an unmarried man, bachelor, young warrior”) + hām (“home, village, farmstead”). Compare also Hagustaldesēa (“Hexham”, literally “Hagustald's Island”).
