Borrowed from Old Norse Mjǫllnir, likely from Proto-Norse *ᛗᛖᛚᛞᚢᚾᛃᚨᛉ (*meldunjaʀ), from Proto-Germanic *meldunjaz, from Proto-Indo-European *meldʰ-n- (“lightning”). Compare Old Norse mjuln (“fire”), Welsh mellt, Slovene mółnja, Russian мо́лния (mólnija).
