Muziris (Malayalam: മുസിരിസ്) is an ancient Chera sea port on the banks of the Periyar River in modern-day state of Kerala, South India on the Malabar Coast. Muziris is believed to be around the times of Biblical King Solomon and was a major center of trade in South India between the Cheras and the Roman Empire. Now there are evidences that merchants from a number of cultures like, Rome and other European countries, Mediterranean, Egypt, Red Sea ports, Chinese territories were in contact with this port. The ancient name of this port in Malayalam (the local language) was "Mucirippattanam". "Muciri" means, "cleft palate" and "pattanam" means, "city". In a flood of the Periyar River in 1341 CE, Muziris was destroyed and centre of commerce was shifted to other areas like Cochin and Calicut.
