Shawnee cake was a favorite diet amongst the Shawnee Indians. The cake was made of maize beaten as fine as possible. This corn meal was then mixed with water, and baked upon a flat stone which had been previously heated in the fire. The recipe for Shawnee cakes was adapted by early white settlers and later became known as jonnycake which is a popular dish in the Southern United States to this day.
