Ultimately from Byzantine Greek Βάραγγος (Bárangos), from Medieval Latin Varingus, from Old Norse ringi, from rr (pledge) or rr (pledge), which is cognate with 古期英語 wǣr (fidelity, loyalty), + Old Norse gangi (companion). Cognate with 古期英語 wærgenga.
