Uncertain. Rix proposes that the term reflects earlier *akes-wo- (“heap of chaff”), itself derived from the same neuter s-stem continued by acus (“husk of grain, chaff”). However, De Vaan notes that the proposed semantic shift of "heap of chaff" to "heap" is highly speculative.
