Late Latin borrowing from Ancient Greek ἀναθεματίζω (anathematízō), from ἀνάθεμα (anáthema, “a thing devoted to evil; a curse”), from ἀνατίθημι (anatíthēmi, “to dedicate, ascribe, set up”), from ἀνα- (ana-, “upon”) + τίθημι (títhēmi, “to put, place”).
