From earlier blēdsian, blœ̄dsian, from Proto-West Germanic *blōdisōn (“to sprinkle, mark or hallow with blood”), from Proto-Germanic *blōþą (“blood”), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰleh₃- (“to thrive, flourish, bloom”). Cognate with Old Norse bletza (“to bless”), whence Icelandic blessa. Equivalent to blōd + -sian.
