First attested around the turn of the sixteenth century. The origin is uncertain; derivation is perhaps from the Ancient Greek καταιγίζω (kataigízō, “I rush down like a storm”), from καταιγίς (kataigís, “a storm descending from above”, 比喩的に “battle”).
