From 中期英語 *chagge, from 古期英語 ċeacga, ċeagga (“broom (plant), furze, or gorse”), diminutive of Proto-West Germanic *kagō (“brushwood, bush”), from Proto-Germanic *kagô (“bush”). Cognate with Bavarian Kag (“the stalk or stem of a cabbage”), dialectal Swedish kage (“treestump”), Norwegian Nynorsk kage, kagge (“low lying bush, small tree”). Doublet of cag and keg.
