From cheap (“purchase, business, market”) +‎ stead (“place”), probably a translation of Old Norse kaupstaðr (“marketplace”). Compare Icelandic kaupstaður (“market town”), Swedish köpstad (“market town”), 古期英語 ċēapstōw (“marketplace”).
