     This matrix form makes it clear that a double rotation can be thought of as two simultaneous simple rotations: in this case a rotation of angle ${\displaystyle \alpha \in (-\pi ,\pi ]}$ in the x–y plane, and one of angle ${\displaystyle \beta \in (-\pi ,\pi ]}$ in the (z–w) plane.

Although a rotation is generally understood as the turning around an axis, this only holds true in three dimensions. In higher dimensions, it is understood as the turning along a two-dimensional plane.
