From Proto-Germanic *dreuzaz, *drauziz, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰrews- (“to break, break off, crumble”). Cognate with Old Saxon drōr, Old High German trōr, and Old Norse and Icelandic dreyri. The historical sense is of something which ‘falls’: the Germanic base is also the source of 古期英語 drēosan (“fall”).
