From an earlier stem *glut-, perhaps from a Proto-Indo-European *gʷlew-, extension from Proto-Indo-European *gʷel- (“throat”), and related to gula (“throat”)), Proto-Slavic *glъtati (“to swallow, devour”), Russian глотка (glotka, “throat”). De Vaan suspects that the root may be onomatopoeic, with original form *gul-, *glu-, and may have been innovated separately in the branches of Indo-European that it appears in, which would technically render the cognacy of the terms invalid (albeit motivated by similar sound-symbolism).
