Derived from Proto-West Germanic *hnukēn, from Proto-Germanic *hnukāną (“to be bent, flex”), possibly through Proto-West Germanic *hnokuk (diminutive noun), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *knewg- (“to bend, pinch”), from Proto-Indo-European *ken- (“to pinch”). Compare Icelandic hnokki (“small hook on the end of a spindle”).
