Borrowed from French jacquerie, from Jacquerie (derogatory nickname for peasants, literally “James”) + -erie. First attested in the early 1500s. In reference to the Jacquerie uprising of 1358 during the Hundred Years' War.

   • 1986, G Krishnan-Kutty, Peasantry in India, page 71:

   • 1996, Orlando Figes, A People's Tragedy, Folio Society, published 2013, page 207:
