From Proto-Italic *maizēō; further origin uncertain. Possibly related to miser (compare with misereō), and possibly related to Ancient Greek μῖσος (mîsos) by means of Proto-Indo-European *mēwdʰ- (“to complain, be emotional about”). De Vaan hesitantly suggests a connection to Proto-Indo-European *(s)meh₂- (“to beckon”).
maereō (present infinitive maerēre, perfect active maeruī); second conjugation, no supine stem
