From Middle English mightsomen, mihtsomen, apparently an alteration of Middle English nühtsomen, from 古期英語 ġenyhtsumian (“to abound, have abundance, suffice”), from Proto-Germanic *ganuhtsumōną (“to suffice”), from *nuhtiz (“sufficiency, enoughness”), from Proto-Indo-European *eneḱ-, *neḱ- (“to reach, attain”). Cognate with Old High German ginuhtsamōn (“to be sufficient”).
