From Proto-Italic, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃erbʰ- (“to turn”), cognate to Umbrian 𐌖𐌓𐌚𐌄𐌕𐌀 (urfeta).
Possibly a substantivization Proto-Italic *orβetā of a past participle *orβetos to an iterative verb *orβeō.
