From Ancient Greek *σάλινον (*sálinon, unattested), presumably from and meaning the same as Latin salīnum (“salt-cellar”), derived from sal (“salt”) (compare salillum).

The salinon (meaning "salt-cellar" in Greek) is a geometrical figure that consists of four semicircles. It was first introduced by Archimedes in his Book of Lemmas.
