Uncertain. Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *(s)krewp-, extended from *(s)ker- (“to cut”), whence curtus. Alternatively, from *skroypos, from a different extension *skreyp-. In either case, a relationship with scrūta is possible, but semantically distant.
