From 中期英語 snid (attested only in the sense of saw and slaughter), from 古期英語 snid, snide (“a cut, incision; cutting implement, saw”), from Proto-West Germanic *snidi; merging with 中期英語 snede (“a morsel, bite; scythe”), from 古期英語 snǣd (“something cut off, morsel, bit; scythe handle”).
