Despite an unusual suffix, apparently from Proto-Indo-European *terh₁- (“to rub, rub by twisting, twist, turn”), thereby cognate with Ancient Greek τερηδών (terēdṓn, “woodworm”) and possibly Lithuanian trandẽ (“maggot”).
