From Proto-Italic *westis, from Proto-Indo-European *wéstis, from *wes- (“to be dressed”). Cognate with Old Armenian զգեստ (zgest), Gothic (wasti), Tocharian B wastsi, and Ancient Greek εἷμα (heîma, “garment”). The root was also the source of English wear.
