From Arabic عَانَة (ʕāna), from Classical Syriac ܐܢܐ, ultimately from Akkadian Anat under Assurnasirpal II and Ha-na-at in the Old Babylonian Period, sometimes connected to worship of the war goddess Anat, whose name is probably Semitic.
