Newcastle United Football Club is an English professional association football club based in Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear. The club was formed in 1892 as a merger between Newcastle East End and Newcastle West End. The club was elected to the Football League in the 1893-94 season. They have played in the top league in England from the 1898-99 season until the 1934-35 season when they were relegated into the Second Division. They have played in the top league in the periods 1948-61, 1965-78, 1984-89, 1993-2009, and then from 2010 to present. Newcastle are England's eighth most successful club of all time, having won the English League championship four times: in 1905, 1907, 1909 and, most recently, in 1927. They have also been runners-up on a further two occasions: in 1997 and 1997 (see Newcastle United F.C. seasons).
