     The biofilm on both the top and support coverslips was immediately fixed with 4% glutaraldehyde in cacoclydate buffer (Electron Microscopy Sciences, PA, USA) and was incubated overnight at 4°C. The next day, the fixing agent was rinsed off with Milli-Q water and subsequently stepwise solvent-exchanged with a graded series of acetone/water solutions (30%, 50%, 80%, 90%, 95%, 100%, each for 20 min).
