OSO 1 (initially designated 1962-Zeta 1) was the first in a series of eight successfully-launched U.S. Orbiting Solar Observatory satellites. The primary mission of OSO 1 was to measure solar electromagnetic radiation in the [ultraviolet]], X-ray, and gamma-ray regions. Its secondary mission was to investigate dust particles in space. It had a nine-sided spinning wheel 1.2 m in dia joined onto a fan-shaped sail. Launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida on March 7, 1962, it decayed from orbit October 8, 1981.
