A late rebracketing of u + -tus, a sequence found in two types of Classical Latin words:

Borrowed from Thracian *ūt (*ūt, “water, river”), from Proto-Indo-European *ūd from *wódr̥ (“water”), and cognate with Sanskrit उदन् (udán, “water”), Ancient Greek ὕδωρ (húdōr, “water”).[1]
