From Ancient Greek κυπρῖνος (kuprînos). The Greek term was first recorded by Aristotle in Historia Animalium. It is suggested that he derived the name from κύπρις (kúpris), a nickname of Aphrodite, in reference to the fish's fecundity. κύπρις is a reference to Aphrodite's birthplace in Cyprus.
